Doyle W. Sansome & Sons Super Lobster Pool, 25 Sansome’s Pl, Hillgrade, NL

I love discovering hidden gems while vacationing in our home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Sansome’s in Hillgrade, about 20 minutes outside Twillingate was certainly a gem. We lucked out with the weather while discovering the Twillingate region in August , it was fantastic. We visited many small communities during our visit , while driving back to home base we saw a sign advertising a Lobster pool, so we had to explore , and we were not disappointed .

If you crave fresh seafood this is the place for you , their lobster pool ensures the lobsters are alive and well . There is also crab, mussels , scallops and of course cod.
I love eating outside, it is indeed a treat for us in our province. The weather was amazing so we opted to eat dockside . The fresh air and warmth of the sun was delightful. Our server was very friendly and welcoming.
One of my favourite seafood starters is calamari , and the calamari at Sansome’s did not disappoint. They were crispy, firm, not chewy . The batter was seasoned nicely, it was basic but well balanced which allowed the taste of the squid to shine through. The tartar sauce was a nice touch and offered a tanginess to the starter.
Next was the scallops, my wife’s favourite , they were pan seared and cooked perfectly.
The fish and chips was amazing, home fries were cooked perfect, the gravy had a nice flavour, I’m thinking made with a beef stock or powder base. The star of the dish , as it should be was the cod, it was so light and flakey , the batter was not thick and doughy , it hugged the fish in an almost protective embrace to keep it together. Seriously, it was awesome.
My daughter Maggie had the Crab on a kaiser bun, the amount of crab was on point, using a kaiser bun you actually need a good ratio of crab to bun. It looks a little messy , but thats my fault as I asked her to open up the sandwich to I could take a picture.
