Bonavista Social Club,Longshore Road, Upper Amherst Cove, NL
Well it is finally spring in Newfoundland , at least in terms of on the calendar. Although generally we have a winter like start to the season , you can sense spring is in the air . Some green grass is peeking out, buds are forming on the trees and seasonal restaurants are busy planning their annual opening.
I visited the Bonavista Peninsula late summer last year, this region is a “must visit” destination for everyone, there is so much to see and do, especially eat. Although my visit was last year, by the time I had the opportunity to write a blog about my experience it was September and the season was almost over, so I decided to write my notes and save it for the spring.
I ate at some wonderful restaurants during my visit, but I did have one restaurant that had been on my bucket list for a few years now, the Bonavista Social Club in Upper Amherst Cove.
Hand Crafted, wood fired pizza is one of my favourite foods. Pizza is about textures, and scents , the aroma of the fresh bread with the slight char on the crust, the flavours of the sauce, cheese and meats all combined make for a pleasant experience. All this and more can be said about the pizza at the Bonavista Social Club.
The main restaurant space is open concept with the pizza oven front and centre. Even though it was summer I wanted to be in that room, watching the activity and enjoying the little things that enhances a culinary experience. The bee patterned cloth napkins, jams and jellies proudly on display, the house made breads for sale all added to my experience.
Speaking of bread, a basket of fresh bread was placed on out table with salted and peppered butter, the bread was warm and had a nice crust, very flavourful .
The first pizza was cartelized onion and spinach , the sweetness of the onion gave the pizza a nice depth of flavour paired with the earthiness of the spinach and cheese.
The second pizza with pepperoni and bell peppers was my favourite , the dough was the main player. The soft crunch and chew of the crust was the perfect vessel for the peppers and pepperoni , one of the best I have eaten. These pizza’s are perfect examples that there is no need to overload a pizza with toppings, let the dough do the talking along with fresh ingredients.
There are many reasons to visit the Bonavista Social Club, firstly, its location, absolutely stunning view of the ocean, the inviting and friendly staff, fresh local ingredients in season and of course the food. As stated above, this restaurant is seasonal so currently not open , for news on when they will open visit their website : http://www.bonavistasocialclub.com

-During the summer this restaurant is very busy, so there may be a waiting line that do move quickly , so plan ahead and be patient, it will be worth the wait.
