The Social House 171 Water Street St. John’s, NL
Downtown St. John’s abounds with charm, the local shops, colorful houses, crisp and refreshing wind and, of course, the selection of restaurants. During one of my visits downtown, this time to get a new passport, I had the opportunity to walk around the east end of Waterstreet. As a phoenix rises from the ashes so did a quaint, and in my opinion trendy restaurant spring from the space that housed Bianca’s. On the day I visited, the place was very busy but the server was still able to accommodate me. The service was quick and friendly, while waiting for my food to arrive, I took the time to admire the craftsmanship of the tables; they were rustic and charming and suited the décor.
I selected the Blooming onions to start, firstly because of the name and secondly I love deep fried onions served anyway I can get them as long as they are house made. They were crispy and full of flavor. I was expecting a different presentation for the onions as I have had them before and resembled a sort of bloom. Having said that, they did not disappoint as they were indeed delicious.
I was in the mood for brunch, the menu had plenty I wanted to try and I went with the Chicken Chorizo Benedict. The food had wonderful presentation and there certainly was plenty of it for a brunch. I was first hesitant when I saw this on the menu but curious as to how the pulled smoked chicken would pair with a poached egg, chorizo and a chipotle hollandaise. It worked! The layer of flavors was a treat to the taste buds; the runny yolk paired beautifully with the hollandaise and the slight smokiness of the chicken and chorizo set the bar high for what was one of the best eggs benedict I have ever eaten. The addition of the fresh fruit and wicked hash browns were also impressive, but the rock star was the benny.
The Social Club is a place that you could certainly start and end your evening, great food, nice atmosphere, friendly staff and even a piano in the next room.
I have one other observation, this was the first downtown restaurant (not a chain) that gave me a free refill on my soda and I did appreciate that.
